Trevor Brown's Black Eyed Madonna

Crystal Castles used this artwork without Trevor Brown's authorisation, which you can read about

  1. Seems like it's biased against CC. Plus it's a war against CC's ex-manager, not the band themselves. Does the band even know or care that any of this went down? Someone ask the band.

So let us get this straight...before the band were big (are they big now?) you are suggesting that 'the management' picks an image for them to use on t-shirts/releases and all sorts of promo material no doubt. This 'found' image just happens to be provocative and by an established subversive artist! Read ALL the links which granted is only TB's side of the story, but everything that CC did stinks of a pre plannrd campaign to ensure max controversy without,of course, TB's permission.
Would TB have gained some exposure? Of course, but he has been around long enough...
Ask the band. Sure. But why do I think that the interview wouldn't last much longer after you did!
So in the end I have to say that you come across as wonderfully nieve and long may you remain so...

  3. I'm sorry but I've been a fan of the band for years and I remember the first time they used the image in 2006 the credit said "Art By Trevor Brown" everywhere they used it. I only learned about Trevor Brown because of that credit and I'll never forget that I was at work and had to delete my history because I was afraid I'd get fired if any of the links showed up on my computer! Ha.

It may have said art by Trevor Brown, after all he is a hip designer to have on yr covers (see Venetian Snares, Deicide etc) the only thing was that they didn't have his permission to use the artwork, especially for free. Do you understand things now?

  5. Anonymous is wrong.

In 2006 Crystal Castles said they didn't know who the artist was. The artwork printed on their first 7" and tee shirts with no credit to Trevor Brown.

  6. No matter what, shouldn't they do something ($$) to make up for using artwork for free? If you don't ask for permission that's called stealing. Everyone knows who's art it is now, so why aren't they doing anything to make it right?
