Patti Smith on Sam Shepard

Then (2013)

Paris, Texas

Last night I mentioned this film to someone who had never seen it and was trying to explain just how perfect it is in every way.  As for Sam Shepard's script well...
I've lost count how many times I've watched this film but it's being lined up again
Here's Ry Cooder on that amazing score
I had two copies of this book stolen from me in Amsterdam but I did eventually find a copy here in Melbourne when I arrived in 1986. It's not cheap second hand sadly but if you do ever see a copy just grab it. An absolutely beautiful companion to the movie

This Is A Restricted Mix

So yesterday when I was putting together the The Thème De Yoyo Head mixes I managed to delete the version of High Ideals and Crazy Dreams I included. A day of searching numerous hard drives and a post to the FB On-U Sound page later and eventually I found it. Turns out it was an unreleased 2001 mix by Adrian Sherwood given to someone back then. Anyway this led to a few more finds in the drives to add to the Silly Mix previously posted. This Restricted Mix includes the On-U tape archivist Pats Dokter's remix of High Ideals, a bit of a Mark Stewart 'As The Veener of Democracy Starts To Fade' Megamix entitled 'The Wrong Name & The Wrong Number (This Is A Restricted Mix)' which I'm pretty certain from memory was spliced together by Jethro R Binks (who was responsible for putting together the 'Major Malfuction' version excursion a while back then 'Cowardice Dub' from 'The Lost Tapes' release. This is followed by an unreleased version of High Ideals by the Strange Parcels with Skip MacDonald singing. Bernard Fowler sang one version and a different Skip mix was released in Japan only. The last two tracks are songs which Mark Stewart played as works-in-progress on Steve Barker's On The Wire show in 2010.

Just got to say one thing: FUCK - that new Thom Yorke ('featuring Radiohead') version of Creep is absolutely FUCKING awful. Go to mix2 where I suspect the average age of the tracks would turn out to be what...30 years old and there is SO much more invention at play...'old man music eh?'

Bob Sargeant R.I.P.

A nice tribute from Rolo McGinty (from The Woodentops):
R.I.P. Bob Sargeant.
Bob produced Giant album that began production in 1985. Bob was a veteran producer already before we met him. He was in the 80’s what they called a hit maker, but he only did a production if he liked it. He was also a lot of fun to be around though meticulous while working, keeping an eye always on time and how much should be achieved within it. Old school hardcore! Bob came to rehearsals always notepad out. We tried different arrangements, tightening up , changing, trying out the what ifs. Bob was the producer of many bands but the Beat was the one for us. Loved them. I was in the studio everyday (Rolo) and it was a big moment for me watching Bob and John Gallen the engineer at work. John is nearest in the photo. They did by hand what you do with computers now. The drop ins and moving live, huge blocks of backing vocals from one tape recorder to another, doubling snares, all kinds of things. Bob played marimbas, some organ, percussion and backing vocals. I cant tell you how much I enjoyed the experience of recording that album.
So with a heavy heart its Goodby Bob and condolences to Babs Sargeant who is hurting right now xx

So the other night I went to see Dan Tucceri performing at the piano in the Carringbush Hotel again and one of the bonuses is that sometimes Dan tells a tale about the performer or the piece that he is playing.
Now my knowledge of classical music is not so hot and so I only learnt the other night (when Dan was performing Dubussy's Pegodes and it kept reminding me of Merry Christmas Mr lawrence / Forbidden Colours) of the influence of Asian music on Debussy and his influence on Ryuichi Sakamoto. As Sakamoto said:

Speeding Lights Mix

Been feeling sluggish so needed a get up and go selection of motorik beats

Gareth Sager & The Hungry Ghosts - St. Jock / Disco Sofa

If like me you think Gareth really is a bit of a genius (even if Steve Beresford DID hit the mark when he said anonymously in an NME article that sometimes you just wanted to give him a good spanking) then check out these great mixes by Jonder over at Nothin' Sez Somethin' of his work that isn't quite so well known as The Pop Group and Rip Rig and Panic
