Breakfast Staple Types Affect Brain Gray Matter Volume and Cognitive Function in Healthy Children

  1. Interesting link, but frankly I don't trust their results. As a non-Japanese living in Japan, I am particularly sensitive to claims like these. The comparison of "Western" bread vs. "Japanese" rice with the rice naturally coming out on top smacks of Nihonjinron (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nihonjinron). Every day I hear these comparisons (competitions, really). Things some Japanese believe: Japanese brains are different than "Western" brains, Japanese people can hear insects differently, Japanese intestines are longer, etc. The West has many stereotypes about Japan, and the Japanese are also only too willing to create their own.
