    Hadn't he just!
    Due to not having access to my 'puter I was playing CD's and hadn't listened to this in years and thought exactly the same thing. Do you know this album (13)? You can see why he had to jettison Coxon to move forward, which is also not meant as a slur to GC.

    I went through that period myself last year when I was without computer for 6 weeks , finished a book or two as well . Yes , I think GC wanted to be in Pavement at this time ! Damon's like Bowie in the way he's not afraid to wear his influences and make them his own .
