Birthday Party - Junkyard

(Thanx Michael!)
(I was very lucky enough to see the Birthday Party's second gig in London due to the fact that Tracey Pew (and Nick Cave?) were staying with friends of mine when they first came across to the UK.)
One of the greatest live bands of all time...

  1. if my memory serves me right their first gig was put on by dave kitson who used to run red flame records, i'm fairly certain his wife marie (who was australian) brought them over.... he couldve signed em but didnt.... i think he used to put bands on at the half moon in putney but not sure if that was their first gig...

I saw the second one (from memory up at the Moonlight in W/ Hampstead!)
Two sisters from Melb who were friends had at least Tracey staying there...which is how I heard about them...funniest ever NC incident was a gig (at Heaven) where my man Sean and Gareth from Rip Rig had jumped on stage just to outstare the audience and on the tube home Nick was doing his best to ignore them, that was until Gareth set fire to the newspaper he was reading LOL!
Still they were an exceptional live band tho!

  3. actually Dave Kitson mightve run nights at the Moonlight, not the Half Moon.... its a long time ago... I'm sure he put on their first gig... maybe they played there twice... I think Marie knew Mick Harvey....I'm fairly certain she brought them over

Much more likely the Moonlight, from memory the Half Moon was still a bit hippyish back then. I saw them quite a few times up there and somewhere in the back of my brain the Red Flame/Moonlight connection is bubbling. JoyDiv also played up there a few times, it was generally a much more post-punk type of venue!
