...To be an addict is to be something of a cognitive acrobat. You spread versions of yourself around, giving each person the truth he or she needs — you need, actually — to keep them at a remove. Let’s stipulate that I do not have a good memory, having recklessly sautéed my brain in fistfuls of pharmaceutical spices. Beyond impairment, there may be no more unreliable narrator than an addict. Recovered or not, I am someone who used my mouth to constantly create one more opportunity to get high.Here is what I deserved: hepatitis C, federal prison time, H.I.V., a cold park bench, an early, addled death.Here is what I got: the smart, pretty wife, the three lovely children, the job that impresses.Here is what I remember about how That Guy became This Guy: not much. But my version of events is worth knowing, if for no other reason than I was there.

The bright green, circular building of Mutato Muzika in Los Angeles is
easy to spot when cruising down Sunset Boulevard. But most people might
not realize it contains the creative hub of Mark Mothersbaugh, a
founding member of DEVO turned award-winning Hollywood composer. Famous
for his use of the synthesizer, Mothersbaugh has accumulated a vast
collection over the years. We had the chance to check out a small
selection of Mothersbaugh's synths and spent some time talking about the
future of music with the prolific artist.

...And so it all started, in slow motion, a pattern of lies, ultimatums, and phoney promises, followed by emails and texts that almost felt designed to be stumbled on, so as to force me to make a decision that he was too much of a coward to face. I was furious. It wasn’t just the responsibility he was refusing to take; it was the person he had turned me into: his mother. We tried to save it. We were both in therapy and seeing a marriage counsellor, too. But it was like dealing with an addict who was unravelling, who couldn’t stop himself. He and I still slept in the same bed – it was a big bed – but in the mornings, we would get dressed and go downstairs and do our own thing. I could either put up with the humiliation, or I could end things.
Eventually, in August 2011, I asked him to move out of the house. I did feel some compassion for Thurston, and I still do. I was sorry for the way he had lost his marriage, his band, his daughter, his family, our life together – and himself. But that is a lot different from forgiveness
