if....(1968)

if.... is a 1968 British drama film produced and directed by Lindsay Anderson satirising English public school life. Famous for its depiction of a savage insurrection at a public school or boarding school, the film is associated with the 1960s counterculture movement because it was filmed by a long-standing cIounter-culture director at the time of the student uprisings in Paris in May 1968. It includes controversial statements, such as: "There's no such thing as a wrong war. Violence and revolution are the only pure acts". It features surrealist sequences throughout the film. Upon release in the UK, it received an X certificate. The film stars Malcolm McDowell in his first screen role and his first appearance as Anderson's "everyman" character Mick Travis. Richard Warwick, Christine Noonan, David Wood, and Robert Swann also star, and Rupert Webster is featured as the young boy Bobby Phillips. if.... won the Palme d'Or at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival. In 2004, the magazine Total Film named it the sixteenth greatest British film of all time. The Criterion Collection released the DVD on 19 June 2007.

150 years of tropical storms mapped

...Hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons are all the same weather phenomenon - in the Atlantic and northeast Pacific the storms are called hurricanes, in northwest Pacific they are known as typhoons and in the south Pacific the term cyclone is used.
Nelson opted to focus the map on Antarctic partly because he is "sick of boring old rectangular projections".
"Hurricanes are a global phenomena and they skirt the equator, spinning off with the effects of prevailing winds and a rotating earth beneath. It turned out that a South Pole projection did the best job of illustrating that hula-hoop nature. Also I wanted to present it in a way that might inspire a bit of a double take. It looked trippy and did right by the data so I went with it."

GOP Women Party Hard (1941)

“On the evening of May 20,” begins an article in the June 16, 1941, issue of LIFE magazine, “members of the Young Women’s Republican Club of Milford, Conn., explored the pleasures of tobacco, poker, the strip tease and such other masculine enjoyments as had frequently cost them the evening companionship of husbands, sons and brothers.”
Thus the storied weekly and photographer Nina Leen chronicled the shenanigans that erupted when a group of GOP women got together for an old-fashioned “smoker” (noun: an informal social gathering for men only) on one long, memorable night in southern New England.
