@DailyDish
What I keep getting reminded of is Paris May 1968!

11:56 AM ET -- Are U.S. officials being too quiet? I wanted to reexamine this question in light of some new comments from today. First, from Spencer Ackerman:

Hadi Ghaemi of the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran said he has a hard time taking a strong stance one way or the other about the Berman-Pence Iran resolution currently being debated on the House floor. But it's wading awfully close into a "political act" for his taste "The text is not objectionable," Ghaemi told me. "But it will be seen as a political act" by the Iranian regime.

Second, via Andrew, comments by Amir Fakhravar, who has been "jailed and tortured in Iran for advocating democracy and speaking out against the Iranian government" and remains in touch with reformers:

"Right now, (Obama) could say, 'America stands for freedom and democracy, and as a United States president, I want to stand behind all of the freedom fighters in the world that are fighting peacefully to have democracy and freedom,'" Fakhravar said. "That's the American Dream. I don't know why he didn't say that. He said, 'this is none of our business.'"

The contrary argument, of course, is that if Obama or Congress speak out more aggressively, it will endanger the reformists in Iran and give ammunition to Khamenei and his allies.

Khamenei's speech today pushed me to reexamine this line of thinking. He didn't need an incendiary line from Obama to stir up anti-U.S. sentiments -- he just made one up. "It was said on behalf of the U.S. President that he was waiting for a day that people came out to streets," he claimed.

It seems my basic question is: Can Obama afford to be slightly more forward leaning on human rights concerns given that Khamenei's government is willing to fabricate statements to advance his own agenda?

WHEN IT ALL BEGAN

THE FEAR HAS GONE

excellent - but written before Khamenei's speech.

BE REASONABLE - DEMAND THE IMPOSSIBLE

I think we find one clue to why he rigged the vote count so crudely. His argument that a majority of eleven million was too big to allow for any irregularities suggests he believed that a big lie was the only one that would work. But if you utter a big lie, you had better hope it could persuade some. It appears to have persuaded no one but a few fools at the Washington Post and the executive editor of the New York Times. And the endless attempt to blame all this on Britain and the US and the "Zionists." This is a regime that is so hermetically sealed, so rigid in its dogma, so brutal in its ideology it probably believes its own lies. It is, as David Brooks notes today, very, very fragile. When every piece of data requires a reassertion of doctrine in order to banish reality from people's minds, government becomes impossible. All that is possible is brute force and terror.

I fear deeply what is about to happen. But I also sense that the Gandhi-strategy of the majority is a winning one. If they can sustain their numbers and withstand the nightly raids, and if they can overwhelm the capital tomorrow in another peaceful show of strength, then they can win. And the world will change. This is their struggle now, requiring the kind of courage that only God can provide. Their God, my God, the God of the Torah and the Koran and the Gospels.

Something is happening in Iran.

YOU'RE WELCOME NICO!

View from your window: Iran

ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF KHAMENEI'S SPEECH:

HERE

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei sided with hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and offered no concessions to the opposition. He effectively closed any chance for a new vote by calling the June 12 election an "absolute victory."

The speech created a stark choice for candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi and his supporters: Drop their demands for a new vote or take to the streets again in blatant defiance of the man endowed with virtually limitless powers under Iran's constitution.

Khamenei accused foreign media and Western countries of trying to create a political rift and stir up chaos in Iran.

"Some of our enemies in different parts of the world intended to depict this absolute victory, this definitive victory, as a doubtful victory," he said, according to an official translation on state TV's English-language channel. "It is your victory. They cannot manipulate it." [...]

Khamenei's address was his first since hundreds of thousands of Mousavi supporters flooded the streets in Tehran and elsewhere in the country in rallies evoking the revolution that ended Iran's U.S.-backed monarchy. On Thursday, supporters dressed in black and green flooded downtown Tehran in a somber, candlelit show of mourning for those who have been killed in clashes since Friday's vote.

Khamenei said the street protests would not have any impact.

"Some may imagine that street action will create political leverage against the system and force the authorities to give in to threats. No, this is wrong," he said.

Khamenei: If they dont accept and continue their way, i'll come again and clarify everything to people frankly

Leader: If they don't[Mousavi,Karroubi] put an end to protests they are responsible

UNCONFIRMED REPORTS THAT THE FRENCH ARE SHUTTING THEIR EMBASSY DOWN IN TEHRAN

The Basij have now begun to cover their faces, whereas previously they hadn't. This indicates they are becoming more scared of retaliation from the general public. Also, we have heard that cell phone service is cut off at night. There have been efforts to identify members of the Basij who have used violence against demonstrators, through facebook and other social networking websites.
It's interesting to see some in the feared militias themselves becoming afraid of retaliation.

"Ever since 9/11 I've been mad at Islam. I've seen it taking us down a dangerous course to a new Dark Ages. I've asked myself: Must every faith go through this fundamentalist course that breeds so much hate and destruction?

Seeing the silent marches in Iran is making me question these feelings. These silent demonstrations of values, faith, and politics ring louder than any protest or sermon. If the Iranians continue to guide this thing down a righteous path they will make history even if they don't overturn the election. And their representation of their faith will rank with that of Ghandi's Hinduism and King's Christianity. I have my doubts, but a reformation of Islam--at least Iranian Shia Islam--could be at hand.

I am praying for them."

By Parisa Hafezi and Fredrik Dahl

TEHRAN, June 18 (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of Mirhossein Mousavi's backers, wearing black and carrying candles, rallied in Tehran on Thursday to mourn those killed in mass protests against an election the defeated candidate says was rigged.

Days of public fury over the disputed election led Iran's top legislative body, the Guardian Council, to invite Mousavi and the two other candidates beaten by hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to discuss their complaints on Saturday.

The election has provoked Iran's worst unrest since the 1979 Islamic revolution. Bloodshed, protests, arrests and a media crackdown have rocked the world's fifth biggest oil exporter, embroiled in a dispute with the West over its nuclear programme.

Witnesses said people packed Imam Khomeini Square in central Tehran on Thursday, a day after Mousavi called on his supporters to gather in mosques or at peaceful rallies.

He told them to wear the colour of mourning -- black as opposed to the green of his election campaign -- in solidarity with families of those wounded or killed in the protests.

"Where are our brothers?" read one banner in the crowd. "Why did you kill our brothers?" read another.

Iran's English-language state television has reported eight people killed in protests since election results were published. Scores of reformists have been arrested across the country.

Security agents detained opposition politician Ebrahim Yazdi while he was in hospital, an ally of his said on Thursday. Yazdi heads the banned Freedom Movement and was foreign minister in Iran's first government after the revolution.

A spokesman for the Guardian Council said it had begun "careful examination" of 646 complaints submitted after the June 12 vote. Complaints include shortage of ballot papers, pressure on voters to support a particular candidate, and the barring of candidates' representatives from polling stations.

Ahmadinejad was declared winner with nearly 63 percent of the vote against 34 percent for his closest rival, Mousavi, a moderate politician who wants better ties with the West.

Mousavi wants the vote annulled and held again. The council has said it is ready only to recount disputed ballot boxes.

Council spokesman Abbasali Kadkhodai said Mousavi and fellow-candidates Mehdi Karoubi and Mohsen Rezaie could raise their problems at an extraordinary council meeting on Saturday.

"CHALLENGE TO WESTERN DEMOCRACY"

Ahmadinejad defended the legitimacy of the vote, telling a cabinet meeting on Wednesday that it had "posed a great challenge to the West's democracy," Mehr news agency reported.

"The ideals of the Islamic Revolution were the winners of the election," Ahmadinejad said, adding that 25 million of 40 million voters had approved the way he was running the country.

The authorities reject charges that they rigged the vote. Scores of thousands of Iranians have braved riot police and religious militia to show their anger on the streets, ignoring Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's call for national unity.

"The friendly atmosphere that existed prior to the election should not turn into an atmosphere of confrontation and enmity afterwards, since both groups of voters believe in the Islamic system," Khamenei was quoted as saying in Kayhan newspaper.

The supreme leader is due to lead Friday prayers, when Ahmadinejad supporters are expected to show their strength.

The semi-official Fars news agency said two children of conservative former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, who backs Mousavi, had been barred from leaving Iran.

Rafsanjani's daughter Faezeh addressed Mousavi supporters on Tuesday. Hardline students called for her and her brother, Mehdi, to be arrested.

Hamid Najafi, editor-in-chief of Kayhan International, an English-language conservative Iranian daily, said the Guardian Council investigation of the vote would calm unrest.

"I think that will be enough to pacify the opponents," he told Reuters. "After the investigation the Guardian Council will issue an official statement. That will be the final act."

He said the overall election result would not change because "there isn't a millionth chance of doing any fraud" and Ahmadinejad's victory was "very obvious". Khamenei's Friday sermon would be "very effective for all these people who have been misled", he added. "Of course everything will calm down."

Iran has denounced foreign criticism of the election, although U.S. President Barack Obama's administration has muted its comments to keep the door open for possible dialogue. (Additional reporting by Dominic Evans and Hossein Jaseb in Tehran; editing by Philippa Fletcher)

Music in the World of Islam - 1: The Human Voice

"...In 1976, 'Music In the World Of Islam' is released, a 6-LP box set of recordings by Jean Jenkins and Poul Rovsing Olsen. Jean Jenkins, Appalachian banjo player, ethnomusicologist, and curator at the Horniman Museum, London, wrote this in her sleeve note: "The human voice is the foundation of all music within the Islamic world. Indeed, in some areas it is the only type of music which exists." Her recording of "Abu Zeluf", sung by Dunya Yunis, a girl from a northern mountain village in Lebanon, is sampled for two tracks on Eno & Byrne's 'My Life In the Bush of Ghosts'..."

"I realize now i do not fear death. I fear my daughter will not be free when i die."

We have set up a website to receive faxes from Iran, which we will post online. Hopefully this will be another way for information about what's going on in Iran to make its way out of the country.
Please disseminate this fax number as widely as possible: 001 773 321 0202. We will post any faxes we receive at iranfax.org.

"At the same time, Iran's Interior Ministry ordered a probe into an attack late Sunday night on Tehran University students in a dormitory reported to have left several students dead and many more injured or arrested. Students say it was carried out by Islamic militia and police. Iran's English-language Press TV said the ministry urged Tehran's governor's office to identify those involved. Iran's influential speaker of parliament, Ali Larijani, condemned the attack.

Students' Web sites reported mass resignations by Tehran University professors outraged over the incident. One medical student said he and his roommate blocked their door with furniture and hid in the closet when they heard the militia's motorcycles approaching. He heard the militia breaking down doors, and then screams of anguish as students were dragged from their beds and beaten violently.

When he came out after the militia had left, friends and classmates lay unconscious in dorm rooms and hallways, many with chest wounds from being stabbed or bloody faces from blows to their heads, he said. The staff of the hospital where the wounded students were taken, Hazrat Rasoul Hospital, was so shocked that they went on strike for two hours, standing silently outside the gate in their white medical uniforms."

The Web proxies and Tor relays are helping. New ones are needed every minute because the govt eventually blocks the old ones. #gr8

(BIG thanx to Paul - Yeah, it is depressing reading but, this battle is about democratic rights.
You call yourself a democracy then abide by the rules.
Mousavi is no angel, but this seems to be a power struggle between the Mullahs.)

Mr.C says you were upset...
"Sorry." Nobody will know, after all who reads this...?

Are you listening Rudd?

"If President Obama wants to support democratic movements on a shoestring, he should support an "Internet freedom initiative" pending in Congress. This would include $50 million in the appropriations bill for these censorship-evasion technologies. The 21st-century equivalent of the Berlin wall is a cyberbarrier, and we can help puncture it.

Mr. Zhou, the son of a Chinese army general, said that he and his colleagues began to develop such software after the 1999 Chinese government crackdown on Falun Gong (which the authorities denounce as a cult). One result was a free software called Freegate, small enough to carry on a flash drive. It takes a surfer to an overseas server that changes I.P. addresses every second or so, too quickly for a government to block it, and then from there to a banned site.

Freegate amounts to a dissident's cyberkit. E-mails sent with it can be encrypted. And after a session is complete, a press of a button eliminates any sign that it was used on that computer."

Nicholas Kristof @ NYT

Ironic really that while the rest of the world wants to smash the cyber-wall, you want to erect one here in Australia! "Fair shake of the sauce bottle mate."

Or are your freedoms different to mine?
