John Lurie: Sleeping With Weapons

(This letter was signed by most of the people interviewed for the article "Sleeping with Weapons," and sent to the New Yorker Magazine. The New Yorker Magazine was unable to respond.)

To the editors of The New Yorker,
As friends and colleagues of John Lurie, we are offended by Tad Friend's article "Sleeping with Weapons". Many of us were interviewed for the piece only to have our words misquoted, twisted, or ignored.
We are writing after so many months because, due to its constant presence on the internet, the article continues to affect John both personally and professionally.
John has advanced Lyme Disease, and we question the ethics of denying its existence by referring to it only as a "mysterious ailment".
By giving credence to the point of view of someone Mr. Friend states was stalking John, the article made light of and in fact exacerbated an already dangerous situation.
We are dismayed at the profile’s near omission of John's significant work as a musician and painter.
We assert that the man presented in the article is not the man we know.

Jimmy Savile says:

Futura

You are a Flickr heavy user and you share your pictures on a daily basis. Has this new medium strengthened your relationship with your fans?
It’s weird I mean… It’s funny because it’s the only place… I’m not on social networks: I’m not on Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, I can’t do all of that but through the last 10 years, I’ve been putting photos on the web, whether it’s on Recon, 5th Dimension, you know, whatever my mystery of online presence: “Oh Futura is there!”, “Oh he’s putting photos here!” You know, I always liked that whole idea. And so Flickr is the most amazing in that… I mean I will always answer comments, so I’m a little bit surprised that… you know I think when you get people they watch, it’s more like voyeurism than participation but I honestly want them to participate because for the moment this is where you can get me, this is where you can actually get me, you know. And if you really say something about a photo I will comment back and if you say something interesting then we could start a dialogue. It’s not like, I don’t have some people doing this shit for me, it’s ME! I’m sitting there, I’m the one! You know, everyday I’m uploading! Come to me! Flickr is interesting because, you know when I first joined I was trying to be in groups. I see how the program works, the application, but I want to change it, I don’t want it to be the way it is. I want to remake it , like my kind of version. And the thing is that groups, when you’re joining these groups, you get bullshit comments. Say something really, don’t say “Great capture!”. There are always clichés like “Great photo!”, “Awesome light!”, blablabla. It’s like, no dude, tell me a story! Engage me so that we can have the feeling that… So I want it to become more like that, like this is the secret place where if you know about me and you think you know about me… you can almost pretend to really know me by having this thing with me. So I think it’s intimidating, mostly I understand. My son is telling me “Dad, you’re giving them way too much! They can’t deal with the content.” It’s probably true but we’ll see… I like the medium. I’m trying to make my son to design something that looks like Flickr, but it’s not Flickr and it’s not Flickriver either. We want to make a Black Flickr! So there’s one kid we know, he can do it, this guy is amazing, a programmer, so we’re kind of working on that. We want to do our own version! And maybe even make it like our own social network; we want to create our own social network! We’ll see, it’s kind of in development right now, but that would be fun, yeah!

While documenting a production staged by a theatre company comprised of recently released offenders (Plan B), Amiel Courtin-Wilson was struck by the presence and natural story telling ability of Daniel P Jones whom he met on the day he was released from prison.
Over a 5 year period a unique artistic collaboration evolved which found initial expression in the short film CICADA (selected to be screened in the prestigious directors fortnight program at Cannes Film Festival in 2009) which went on to win and be nominated for several major awards in Australia.

Future Map of The United States

Hmmm!

A six-year study of Britain's drug laws by leading scientists, police officers, academics and experts has concluded it is time to introduce decriminalisation and conclude the move will not lead to a significant increase in use of controlled drugs.
They also say that imposing minimal or no sanctions on those growing cannabis for personal use could go some way to undermining the burgeoning illicit cannabis factories controlled by organised crime.
They refuse to support full legalisation of ALL drugs however saying that allowing the legal sale of drugs such as heroin or cocaine could cause more damage than the existing drugs trade.

The Tree That Grew

After I had planted 32 trees all box elders, in the spring of 1907, I left them to grow in their new home for a year until they were six feet tall, before beginning the chair. In the spring of 1908 I gradually began the work of training the young and pliable stems to grow gradually in the shape of a chair. Most of this work consisted in bending the stems of these trees and tying and grafting them together so as to grow, if possible with all the joints cemented by nature. This was largely an experiment with me and it was with a great deal of interest that I watched and assisted nature in growing piece of furniture.
The first summer's growth found all the joints I had made by tying and grafting grown firmly together. Some of the trees I found, however, grew much faster than others. To overcome this, I began to cut the stems of those trees that to my notion had grown large enough. This did not kill these trees but simply retarded their growth so as to give the weaker trees a chance to catch up.
In this manner I let these trees grow for seven years. During the last two years I had only four trees growing from the root. These were the four that consisted the legs of the chair and all the other stems kept alive from these four stems because they were grafted to them. After the seventh year all the trees were cut, making in all eleven years from the time the seed was sown until the chair was finally completed.

Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band - 'Beat Club' (April 12 1972)

Radio Bremen, Funkhaus, Bremen, Germany
TV Program

1. Hair Pie Bass Solo (The Mascara Snake) (0:00)
2. Click Clack Take 1 (3:08)
3. Click Clack Take 2 (6:51)
4. Golden Birdies and Band Intro (8:18)
5. I'm Gonna Booglaraize You Baby Take 1 (11:12)
6. I'm Gonna Booglaraize You Baby Take 2 (15:41)
7. Steal Softly Through Snow (Band Instrumental) (20:49)
8. I'm Gonna Booglaraize You Baby Take 3 (24:18)

Bill Harkleroad: I'm Gonna Booglarize You got played an awful lot and was definitely part of our live show. Like Click Clack and Alice In Blunderland, Booglarize you was a staple part of the set on three basic tours - 1971, 1972 and 1973. I can specifically remember the band performing it on a German TV show called Beat Club. Like all TV shows at that time, they weren't ready for loudly performed music. Our type of music was designed to be played loud, it didn't have to be earsplitting, but it had to be played with a certain amount of volume just to push enough air to feel the excitement level of it - because we did have energy, no question about it!
I remember how difficult it was, beating the crap out of the instrument and jumping around, when you could hear people whispering over the low volume. ... Back then live TV shows were only one step better than lip-synching. It always felt funny playing to 30-odd people who were clapping politely while the TV producer was trying to make it look like a crowd 500. It was a very sterile environment and of course the Magic Band came over as being totally 'over-the-top' with our look - I remember stumbling around on my high heeled green shoes.

Heiko Hasenbein: They played I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby. The presenter called the song burlesque and pointed out that Captain Beefheart is musically connected with Frank Zappa; she said that Captain Beefheart doesn't want to hear about this, because he always gets wild and crazy if someone mentions Frank Zappa. The live performance was astonishing. Captain Beefheart got two microphones bound together with tape. He tried to hit the deepest note he could get. Beefheart wore a black jacket and red satin trousers. The band (Zoot Horn Rollo, Ed Marimba, Roy Estrada, Rockette Morton, Winged Eel Fingerling) sounded tight and compact to give Captain Beefheart the vocal freedom he needs. The psychedelic light effects were a bit disturbing; but apart from that a great performance with Captain Beefheart in fine form.
