Taking The Piss

Chances are pretty good you've recently seen the ‘Banksy on Advertising’ quote that begins, ‘People are taking the piss out of you everyday.’ The passage is from Banksy's 2004 book Cut It Out, and it presents the idea that if advertisers are going to fill your world with ads, you have every right to ‘take, re-arrange and re-use’ those images without permission. The quote has been posted widely on Facebook, Tumblr, and Twitter, which is where I found it.
Here's the interesting part:
Most of it is swiped directly from an essay I wrote in 1999, in the ‘Death, Phones, Scissors’ issue of my zine Crap Hound. The first paragraph is more or less original, but the rest is mine, right down to the same words and phrases.
See for yourself. Here's the Banksy quote followed by the relevant part of my essay as it appeared in Crap Hound. (The full essay is linked at the end of this post.) Pink indicates indirect references, and yellow shows the direct swipes...

Kissinger says Putin is a 'patriot'

RasPutintin?
Kissinger said Putin, who was elected to a third term as president in an election marred by irregularities and protests against his rule, "is not anti-western."
"He is, above all, a Russian patriot who feels humiliated by the experience of the 1990s, which were in the most formative period of his career," Kissinger said in an interview with CNN, referring to the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union and the crisis that followed.
"He is very resentful of what he interprets as intervention in Russian domestic affairs and even more, of course, in what he may interpret and does interpret as some American tendencies to support his political opponents in order to encourage his overthrow," he said.
"But I believe that a dialogue is possible and on specific issues he can turn out to be a constructive partner," he said.

Sedation of Millions

The 'Sedation Of Millions' print is inspired by the title of my favorite Public Enemy album 'It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back'. I think the biggest problem in America is the indifference and complacency about important issues that results from much of the population being perpetually hypnotized by conspicuous consumption, social media, entertainment, and self-medication. Using sedation and escapism for relief from the rat race might make us less aware (blissfully ignorant) but also less empowered to improve our role within the rat race… a vicious cycle of cause and effect.

Atari Teenage Riot's Alec Empire Donates Money From Sony Ad to Hacker Group Anonymous

Alec Empire, frontman of the German electropunk group Atari Teenage Riot and founder of the Digital Hardcore label, is now also a 21st century Robin Hood of sorts.
Empire has handed a large sum of money earned from Sony Entertainment off to FreeAnons, which is part of the pro-hacker Anonymous Solidarity Network. The group offers financial support to individuals facing legal trouble for alleged work with the Anonymous hacker group.
The money came from licensing Atari Teenage Riot's song "Black Flags" for use in a commercial for the PlayStation Vita handheld console. It's a particularly humorous move considering that Anonymous has in the past been in direct conflict with Sony.
