In 1967 Wilkes was the art director of the Monterey International Pop Festival. He created all graphics and printed materials for Monterey Pop, including festival’s psychedelic poster.

Iran 'security state' lambasted

Mr Mousavi said post-election arrests would radicalise protesters further.

Iranian opposition leaders have criticised what they describe as the "security state" imposed in the country after the controversial June elections.

They also called for the release of people detained during mass protests that followed the vote.

I forgive you: The Clash's drummer makes peace with the man who sacked him


In the late 1970s, a drummer called Topper Headon joined The Clash, the most exciting rock’n'roll band in the world. There followed five years of non-stop playing, partying and drug-taking…but by 1982, Headon’s heroin addiction was out of control, and Clash leader Joe Strummer was forced to sack him. Then things got really bad. Today, reflective and sober, he tells Mark Lucas his remarkable story.

Self-help ‘makes you feel worse’ says study

Canadian researchers found those with low self-esteem actually felt worse after repeating positive statements about themselves. They said phrases such as “I am a lovable person” only helped people with high self-esteem.
