I forgive you: The Clash's drummer makes peace with the man who sacked him

In the late 1970s, a drummer called Topper Headon joined The Clash, the most exciting rock’n'roll band in the world. There followed five years of non-stop playing, partying and drug-taking…but by 1982, Headon’s heroin addiction was out of control, and Clash leader Joe Strummer was forced to sack him. Then things got really bad. Today, reflective and sober, he tells Mark Lucas his remarkable story.

Self-help ‘makes you feel worse’ says study

Canadian researchers found those with low self-esteem actually felt worse after repeating positive statements about themselves. They said phrases such as “I am a lovable person” only helped people with high self-esteem.

'Angel Walk' by Scurvy Bastard

Angel Walk

She was
hammered in Hammersmith
after drinking voddies with the squaddies
on the 3:15 from Slough
Then the cider saturated siren
head-butted a Western Union window
which never stood a chance
Bruises on the babe
Blood on the sun

She had
been to her man’s funeral that day
As he was sent to the firebox
she wondered
Would it be bad taste to ask
for the titanium plate from his skull
She wanted to use it for an ashtray
after all
that’s what it would be anyway

She has
eyes like black moons risen
and a voice like a codeine cocktail
You can hear it in the nether shadows
of West London pubs
replacing the ghosts of smoke filled rooms
with a smoke of her own
Heart rampaged, soul savaged
The cat walks on

As well as being the best man at my wedding way back in the early eighties (!) Scurvy is also the inspiration for 'Si the serial killer' in 'The Preacher'!
Apart from this 'Exile' exclusive his latest poem 'Vespers' can be found here.
