Tom McGrath 1940 - 2009 RIP

(Born 23 October, 1940 in Rutherglen, Glasgow, died 29 April 2009)
More from 'The Guardian' here and 'The Herald' here.

Another great Glaswegian bites the dust.
Playwright and piano player McGrath was the original editor of 'International Times'. A close friend of Alex Trocchi and author of the play 'The Hardman' about the infamous Jimmy Boyle.
There is a superb book of interviews with him from 'The Riverside Interview' series probably published in the early 80's, if you see it grab it!

I am personally indebted for his founding of the Third Eye Centre in Glasgow, a shrine to the avant garde, which is still in operation as the Centre for Contemporary Arts and where 35 years ago I first came across so many things that are still a part of my life.

  1. I too have fond memories of the Third Eye Centre. It's not quite the same now it's the CCA...the intimacy has gone, but the spirit is still there.
