Caster Semenya: top athletics official admits lying over gender tests
South Africa's top athletics official is fighting for his political life after admitting that he lied over gender tests on runner Caster Semenya.
The South African government today led calls for Leonard Chuene to resign as president of Athletics South Africa, and the ruling African National Congress described ASA's handling of the affair as "disgusting". But the beleaguered official remained defiant, insisting that he will not "jump ship".
A leaked email exchange last week forced Chuene to admit that he knew women's 800m champion Semenya had undergone a gender test prior to the world championships, something he had always publicly denied. He claimed that he kept the information secret to safeguard the 18-year-old's privacy.
"Mr Chuene has not only lied to us at the ministry, but to the whole country, and this is not acceptable," Oosthuizen said. "We are convinced that the perpetual denial of the knowledge of these tests have fuelled the continuous violation of Ms Semenya's rights and dignity, by foreign and some local media."

What's it all about?
Mick Jones and Nicky 'Topper' Headon of The Clash ~ have recorded together for the first time in 27 years ~ in aid of a prisoners' charity.
The guitarist and drummer have reunited to play with Billy Bragg on a new version of their 1978 song Jail Guitar Doors in aid of Bragg's organisation of the same name which works with prisoners.
The duo last shared a recording session when they worked on The Clash's album Combat Rock, but Headon's drug use saw him ejected from the band on the eve of a tour to promote the release in 1982. He was replaced by Terry Chimes, who had played on the band's first album.
Jones was guitarist and co~frontman for punk pioneers The Clash, alongside the late Joe Strummer, but he too was kicked out the following year, leaving Strummer to soldier on for one more album Cut The Crap.
Jones, who was the first person to donate money to the scheme to allow guitars to be delivered to a jail, said: "The guys were telling us how much this scheme had helped them move on from their previous lives before prison.
It was really touching to think we've helped, even if it's in a small way."

Kids kill Panama 'Montauk monster' by lake
The children told their parents they had thrown the body back in the lake. When the parents went to investigate, it had been washed up on the shore.
One of the children told The Sun: "I have only seen that creature once before - and it was in the Tolkien film."
Meet the man who inspired Glenn Beck
On Saturday, I spent the afternoon with America's new breed of angry conservative. Up to 75,000 protesters had gathered in Washington on Sept. 12, the day after the eighth anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks, sporting the now familiar tea-bagger accoutrements of "Don't Tread on Me" T-shirts, Revolutionary War outfits and Obama-the-Joker placards. The male-skewing, nearly all-white throng had come to denounce the president and what they believe is his communist-fascist agenda.
Even if the turnout wasn't the 2 million that some conservatives tried, briefly, to claim, it was still enough to fill the streets near the Capitol. It was also ample testament to the strength of a certain strain of right-wing populist rage and the talking head who has harnessed it. The masses were summoned by Glenn Beck, Fox News host and organizer of the 912 Project, the civic initiative he pulled together six months ago to restore America to the sense of purpose and unity it had felt the day after the towers fell.
In reality, however, the so-called 912ers were summoned to D.C. by the man who changed Beck's life, and that helps explain why the movement is not the nonpartisan lovefest that Beck first sold on air with his trademark tears. Beck has created a massive meet-up for the disaffected, paranoid Palin-ite "death panel" wing of the GOP, those ideologues most susceptible to conspiracy theories and prone to latch on to eccentric distortions of fact in the name of opposing "socialism." In that, they are true disciples of the late W. Cleon Skousen, Beck's favorite writer and the author of the bible of the 9/12 movement, "The 5,000 Year Leap." A once-famous anti-communist "historian," Skousen was too extreme even for the conservative activists of the Goldwater era, but Glenn Beck has now rescued him from the remainder pile of history, and introduced him to a receptive new audience

Apparently Ahmadinejad was aware of the chants and their effect on the interview. He is said to have become flustered and quickly wrapped up the interview.
