Can with Tim Hardin - Rare Rehearsal & Live Improvisation (1975)

A little known fact is that after Damo Suzuki left Can, there were a number of other vocalists who rehearsed and played live with them before they added Rosko Gee and Reebop to the core line up of Irmin Schmidt, Michael Karoli, Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit. These included Thaiaga Raj Raja Ratnam from Indonesia and the Japanese vocalist Phew.
Tim Hardin was another singer who joined their ranks for a while at the tail end of 1975.
A couple of recordings survive from their time together. There is a rehearsal (the exact date of which is unknown) and a live improvised track from a gig at the Hatfield Polytechnic on the 21st of November 1975.
It may seem a strange combination but it sort of works...though I cannot imagine Can playing 'If I Were A Carpenter' as an encore!

  2. Like bumkuncha I'm curious also, I only came across Tim Hardin through the Singer Saints blog, when I thought I should add more 70's folk music to my collection.
    Great post.

Yeah it is interesting! I will stick up some other sessions with Phew and Raj later...back in the 70's I wrote a couple of times to Can's studio Inner Space in Koln and was given some cassettes filled with jams by Herr Czukay. I also got to know their lyricist peter Gilmour in London way back and he had hours of unreleased stuff. man I wish I had that now still!

Yeah it is a strange combination and I think just shows how uncertain Michael Karoli was of his vocals, tho' having Tim 'Heroin' in the band was also I feel never going to last long...

  7. I was lucky to know Tim when he lived in London and saw him perform with Can at The Roundhouse in 75.
And yes,it was a strange combination...which didn't last long (due mainly I think to own Tim's personal demons).

Interesting and I think that you have nailed (spiked?) as to why it was such a short union.

  10. Hi Mona.
What a find. I love Can and Tim Hardin.
Dropped you a line about a year ago about the bad ole days in London town - I used to hang around the improv scene in the mid 80s, our paths must have crossed at some point.
Currently immersed in Sun Ra - after years of dipping in, I'm finally 'getting' him. I VERY strongly recommend the 2-CD version of Disco 3000 (already OOP but still available 2nd hand if you look around).
Take care, and many thanks again.

  11. Sorry to be an ignoramus but how do I get this to work/download? Have not used torrents before. Been a fan of CAN for the last 20 years and have waited at least ten years to hear this. Thanks for the link!

It's not a torrent...just press the blue download button on the left that comes up at 4shared and then extract the .rar file (Google for a 'free rar unzipper' which are different types for Macs and PC's.
It's really easy but may seem daunting.
